How to Making a Site With WordPress

105 36
You can easily build your own

website using the WordPress open source tool.

Nowadays, website construction has been made a lot

simpler. A while back, let's say ten or more years ago, here's what would

happen:

1. Decide what type of website you want
2. Find a company online that specializes in building them
3. Mortgage your house, your car, your dog, and your sanity to afford it
or
4. Travel deep in to the seediest of coffee shops to find the webmaster who seems

to have missed the line God was handing the social skills out in
5. Pray. Pray Hard that you get something you can use

Now, thankfully, times have changed. So much so in fact that you, yes YOU, can

build the website yourself! Hallelujah!
And as it seems I'm in the mood to preach some gospel, I'm just the one to tell

you how to do it. Here we go!

Here are the three steps to

building your own website:

1. Purchase Your Domain Name

Purchasing a domain name can easily be done (told you!) through one of the domain

registrars or website hosting companies. Names can be purchased for as low as

$8.99 per year (how's that for cheap?). So if you've ever had a hankering to

start a Waffle appreciation site, and call it... let's say "WorshipfulWaffles"

(as of now it's available, I checked: $12.99, you can even get the.us version

additionally for $3.99) you can go to one of the registrars and purchase it. Now

if you really like to cover your bases, you could also pick up "vengefulwaffles"

(see Hebrews 10:30-31), because hey, you never know which way a special someone

could turn and you might as well get your waffles in a row for $25.98 now!

2. Pick a Web Host

There are more choices when it comes to web hosts than you can shake a stick at

(believe me, I tried!)
How much traffic are you looking to bring in with your new site? How big is your

site? Are you going to have a lot of email addresses with your site's name?

(email hosting) Are you looking to host more than one web site with a single

hosting account?

These are important questions to ask yourself, as this might make a difference

when it comes to the choice of getting your own server, renting a virtual server,

or using a shared hosting account. For most users, using a shared hosting service

will be more than adequit, as long as any specific features you are looking for

are included with it.
Web hosts also need to be measured by other things, such as their server uptime

(percentage of time their server aka your webpage is online with no issues), and

the tools they make available to you for building and maintaining your website

(WordPress anyone?). Will they make automated backups of your site for you, and

how easy are they to contact if problems occur for customer service based

issues?

3. Create Your Website

You have quite a few options when looking to create your website, such as hiring

a website designer online, finding a friend or acquaintance you could pay to

build one for you, or... make it yourself with WordPress!

As mentioned before, Wordpress is a blogging tool and content management system

that is open source, i.e. free to use. WordPress was developed by Mike Little and

Matt Mullenweg in 2003 to create and manage personal blogs. Since it's beginning,

it has blossomed into a full featured website development suite with a host of

tools, plugins and widgets to rival any online software suite. Add to this the

easy to understand and navigate user interface and you have a great piece of open

source software.

Alongside the features available in WordPress, another option to appreciate is

the multitude of themes offered by aftermarket developers. There are some really

impressive options, be it a photographic blog, an affiliate website, or a full

blown e-commerce site, you can be assured that you will find a theme that will

work for you.

In order to create your website and be able to install a theme after you are done

signing up for a web hosting service and get your domain name, all you will need

to do is go into the hosting services cPanel and install WordPress. This takes

less than 5 minutes, and usually is a one click operation. Easy!
