How to Replace the EGR Valve on a 2005 Explorer
- 1). Place the Explorer in "Park" and turn the engine off. Remove the key from the ignition and allow the Explorer to cool down for a half hour before attempting any work under the hood.
- 2). Open the hood of the Explorer and identify the EGR valve. The valve is found on the engine intake manifold and is a small, circular looking valve. If needed, the Explorer owner's manual has a diagram.
- 3). Loosen and remove the bolts surrounding the valve, securing it in place, by using a socket wrench. Remove the valve from the manifold by pulling it out of place. If there is excessive carbon buildup, force may be required.
- 4). Clean the valve mount using carburetor cleaner, a wire brush and rag. Clear away any built-up carbon or debris.
- 5). Install the new EGR valve on the valve mount and replace each bolt. Tighten the bolts using the socket wrench to secure the valve in place. Close the hood of the Explorer.
