There are some other cases of cataracts which are present since birth or it can also be triggered as a result of some drugs, and physical or chemical injury of the eye.
Cataract surgery is probably the best treatment to resolve a cataract issue.
This surgery is known to completely clear up the cloudiness of the eye lens.
A brief insight into the surgery: During the cataract surgery procedure, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens.
The technique used during the surgery is called phacoemulsification which in other words means small cut cataract surgery.
The cut is very small because the attempt is to make the center section of the lens liquefied and then it is moved out or vacuumed.
The cataract surgery procedure takes place under local anesthesia and after that a small opening is made on one side of the cornea.
A device is inserted into the eye, which breaks the lens into minute pieces by producing ultrasound vibrations.
The small pieces are then removed through the small cut in the eye by using suction.
During the cataract surgery procedure, the doctors usually use a laser to make a cut in the eye.
It is believed by the doctors that better the cut, quicker would be the cataract surgery recovery time.
The removal of the cataract is followed by the insertion of an artificial lens which is also known as an intraocular lens or IOL as well and the procedure is known as 'intraocular lens implantation.
' The IOL is a clear silicone with a specific optical power chosen by the doctor according to the requirements of the patient.
It is permanently implanted in the eye and also doesn't require any special care.
Recovery Time: The cataract surgeries are believed to be very safe and its success rate is over 98 percent which obviously is very satisfactory.
Although it is a very safe surgery, but still the patients are advised to discuss the associated risk with the surgeon about the surgery.
Patients do feel slight irritation in their eyes after the surgery, which is a very normal thing to happen.
The patient is advised pain killers such as Tylenol by the doctors to relieve them from any pain or irritation in the eyes.
Further, tearing of eyes and sensitivity to light are also very normal things to happen.
Eye drops are also used to avoid any eye infection and should be used as advised by the doctor.
