How to Determine Book Value Per Share

104 207
    • 1). Find the present market value of the single share of stock by looking up the stock in the financial section of a newspaper, or on a site that lists stock information such as Yahoo! Finance or MSN Money.

    • 2). Obtain the latest quarterly report for the company. You can find quarterly reports through a company's website, or by requesting the quarterly report from the SEC. Companies listed on stock markets must file quarterly reports as public records.

    • 3). Locate the company's listed total assets and liabilities in its quarterly report.

    • 4). Subtract the company's liabilities from its total assets to calculate the total book value of the company. Divide this amount by the total number of shares outstanding to determine the book value per share for the company. Locate the total outstanding shares by checking the most recent quarterly report for the company, or by checking the same financial sources where you found the present market value per share.
