Following the international smash-hit success of Brief Encounter in London and New York, the innovative theatrical creative force Kneehigh return to the West End with their exciting new adaptation of cult French musical film The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg!

It is 1957 and we are within the French port of Cherbourg. Jazz, sailors and vin rouge dance deliciously in the air, and l'amour laps against the shores of the heart! Boy (young auto mechanic Guy Fouchier) loves girl (umbrella shop sales assistant Genevi?ve Emery). They whisper "je t'aime" with the certainty of youth, but when war comes between them, Genevi?ve has to decide on between waiting for her homespun hero or plumping for the dashing diamond dealer asking for her hand... quel dilemme! Oh, and did we mention the baby that is on its way? Zut alors!

Based on the film by Jacques Demy, with the score of Grammy and Oscar-winning composer Michel LeGrand (Yentl, Windmills of your Mind), featuring two of his greatest songs "Watch What Happens" and "I Will Wait for You", and lyrics translated by Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof), Kneehigh's new production of The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg sails into the Gielgud Theatre following a limited run at Curve Leicester. The outstanding cast consists of Olivier Award-winning Joanna Riding, international cabaret sensation "Meow Meow", Carly Bawden, Gareth Charlton, Andrew Durand, Cynthia Erivo, Dominic Marsh, Aki Omoshaybi, Laura Brydon and Matt Wilman.

Brief history of the Garrick Theatre London
The Garrick Theatre was created by Walter Emden, with CJ Phipps brought in as a consultant to aid with the planning on this challenging web site, which included an underground river.
The theatre was built for W.S. Gilbert, who was responsible for the book and lyrics of all of the Savoy Operas with Sir Arthur Sullivan. The theatre opened on 24th April, 1889. In 1889 Sir John Hare produced and starred within the Profligate with Johnstone Forbes Robertson and Lewis Waller.
Originally the theatre had 800 seats on four levels, but the gallery (leading) level has because been closed along with the seating capacity reduced to 656. The stunning gold leaf auditorium was restored in 1986 by the stage designer Carl Toms and in 1997 the front facade had a facelift. The theatre has mostly been associated with comedies or comedy-dramas.
