Survive Your Atlanta Dragon*Con Trip With These Tips

106 8
Dragon*Con is one of the most unique annual events in Atlanta, and it attracts people from all over the world. If you are visiting Atlanta over Labor Day Weekend to attend Dragon*Con, here are a few tips to help you during your trip to our city.

Where to Stay

If at all possible, stay Downtown so you can be close to all of the action. Due to the popularity of Dragon*Con, plus a slew of other Labor Day Weekend events in the area, the Downtown hotels will sell out.

If you are stuck with no place to stay, there are a few other convenient options. Our recommendation would be to stick to the Marta line so that you can take public transportation and not worry about our notorious Atlanta traffic. Hotels in Midtown and Buckhead fit this criteria without taking you too far out of town. You can also check out our tips on more affordable hotels around Atlanta and unique boutique hotels.

What to Eat

Dragon*Con may keep you busy, but everyone has to eat - so why not try a few Southern staples while you are here? A few places to try without venturing too far from Downtown include:
  • Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles - the name says it all!
    529 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta
  • The Varsity - this greasy grub drive in is an Atlanta landmark
    61 North Avenue, Atlanta
  • Lunacy Black Market - one of the best foodie spots located Downtown. This spot is laid back, but reservations are required.
    231 Mitchell St SW Atlanta
  • Chick-fil-A - if you don't live in a state that has Chick-fil-A, try one of their signature chicken sandwiches and see why this place has a loyal following. Perfect for a quick bite near Dragon*Con, you'll find these are all over, including in Peachtree Center and the CNN Center Downtown.

    Getting Around

Navigating a new city is always a challenge - do you use public transportation, cabs, rent a car or just hoof it? When you are staying Downtown for an event like Dragon*Con, an argument can be made for all of these options.

If you are planning to stay in the immediate area around the event, your feet will be sufficient. Downtown is home to plenty of attractions if you have any downtime. You won't find all of our top restaurants in the Downtown area, but there is plenty to keep you full. A few stops on Marta will get you to Midtown where you can access even more great restaurants and attractions - if you need to see some sunshine and you're looking to see a different part of town, take a walk through Piedmont Park.

While Atlanta is not a big taxi city, during large events, taxis and car services like Uber are readily available to take you where you need to go.
