How to Service a VW Beetle Transmission
Things You'll Need
Instructions
1Place your Volkswagen Beetle in "Park," and ensure it is setting on a level surface. Set the emergency break to keep the car from moving during the procedure.
2
Inspect the bottom side of your car for any leaks or damage to the transmission pan or the transmission itself. Signs of damage could include holes, scarring on the pan, or dried transmission fluid on the side of the pan. If signs are present, have your car inspected by a professional mechanic.
3
Use a socket wrench to remove the transmission pan drain plug, and allow the old transmission fluid to drain into a separate waste receptacle.
4
Remove the transmission pan using a socket wrench to remove the bolts on each of the four corners of the pan. Once removed, the transmission filter will now be visible, and should be removed by unscrewing it from the transmission.
5
Clean out any sediment from the bottom of the pan, and make sure you remove any metallic fragments that have accumulated on the magnets that are located in the bottom of the pan. Clean paper towels are ideal to use since they can be thrown away. Remove the old transmission pan seal that is located along the perimeter of the side that bolts to the bottom of the transmission.
6
Place a new seal on the transmission pan, and screw a new transmission filter into place.
7
Secure the transmission oil pan into place using a socket wrench, and place the oil pan drain plug into place.
8
Start the car and place it in gear for 10 seconds, and then place the vehicle back in "Park." Do not drive the car at this point. With the vehicle idling, remove the transmission pan plug to drain off additional transmission fluid. Once the flow stops, replace the oil pan plug and turn off the engine.
9
Top off the transmission with fresh fluid following the owner's manual specifications for your model Volkswagen Bug.
10
Use the transmission dipstick to ensure fluid level is adequate and inspect the transmission pan seal for any leaks before driving.
