How to Do the Brakes on an '89 Jeep Cherokee
- 1). Open the hood on your '89 Jeep Cherokee. Unscrew the cover for the brake fluid reservoir with a flathead screwdriver. Raise your Jeep with the jack and then lower it onto the jack stands.
- 2). Remove the lug nuts from the wheels with a lug nut wrench. Remove the wheels.
- 3). Choose one corner to work on. The brake caliper straddles the rotor. Insert your flathead screwdriver between the upper part of the caliper and the rotor. Push it back and forth to separate the two components.
- 4). Locate the two retainer bolts that secure the caliper to the mounting bracket. Remove the bolts with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and socket. Slide the caliper over the top portion of the rotor. Secure the caliper to the frame of your jeep with some rope. Pull the spent brake pads out of the caliper.
- 5). Compress the caliper with the C-clamp and install your replacement brake pads into the caliper. Pull the caliper back over the rotor and bolt the caliper mounting back in place.
- 6). Push the wheel back onto the axle and replace the lug nuts with the lug nut wrench. Use the same procedure to replace the pads on the remaining three wheels. Use the jack to lift the Jeep off of the jack stands. Set the stands aside and use the jack to lower your Jeep to the ground.
- 7). Replace the brake fluid reservoir cover. Start your engine and pump on the brake pedal repeatedly for one minute to seat the pads correctly.
