How to Make Lamps From Recycled Materials
- 1). Determine the inside measurement of the trivets and cut the bamboo placemats lengthwise to fit.

Lay the cut placemat on the back of a men's shirt and cut around it; repeat for the second mat. - 3). Make a thin line of hot glue around the mat about 1/8 inch away from the edge and affix the cloth to the placemat. Set the mats aside to dry.
- 4). Use a needle and thread that matches the bamboo to sew the ends of the mat together widthwise to form a cylinder. Space the stitches one-and-a-half to two inches apart for best results.
- 5). Attach the bamboo cylinder to the inside of one of the trivets with thumbtacks to form the base and repeat to form the top.
- 6). Mark the inside of the lamp, a half inch from the top edge, in the middle of each side, and half inch away from each corner. Use the awl to poke holes at these points and secure the mat to the trivet with small screws.
- 7). Cut a piece of plywood sized to slide inside the lamp and drill a half-inch hole in the center. Cut two wood strips to fit and glue them along opposite edges of the plywood. Glue the plywood into the bottom of the lamp with the wood strips facing down to form legs.
- 1). Push the lamp cord through the hole in the lamp base. Split the cord between the wires and knot them together two inches from their ends. Ensure the knot is big enough not to slip or be pulled through the lamp base.

Cut the split wires to one-and-a-half inches in length and strip a half-inch of insulation of the ends. Twist the insulation while removing it to help bind the wires together. - 3

Pull the socket apart and loosen the screws on either side. Wrap one of the exposed wires around the shaft of a loosened screw. Wrap the other exposed wire around the other screw shaft and tighten both screws. - 4). Lock the upper half of the socket back in place over the base, making sure that the wires are neither pinched nor crowded.

Slide the lamp rod into the socket and screw into place. Push the cord through the hole in the tube. Tighten the rod nut over the cord and tube and install the plug.
