    • 1). Remove the iPhone from its box. Remove the iPhone connection cable from the box. Insert the Apple proprietary connector on one end of the iPhone connection cable into the bottom of the iPhone. Insert the other end of the iPhone connection cable into a USB port on the computer. Leave the computer on and the iPhone alone so that it can be charged by the USB port.

    • 2). Return to the computer after two hours have passed. Launch the default web browser.

    • 3). Search for a website that features downloads of the iPhone operating system--the sites that enthusiasts provide for this service often change, so you must search for one using a search engine. Click on the link to download any version of the operating system that is prior to 1.1.2 to the desktop. Quit the web browser when the download is complete.

    • 4). Launch the iTunes program by selecting it from the "Start" > "All Programs." Hold the iPhone so that the screen is facing you and the "Home" button is at the bottom. Press the "Sleep/Wake" button at the top-right edge of the iPhone at the same time as you press the "Home" button. Count up to 10 seconds. Release the "Sleep/Wake" button but continue to hold the "Home" button as you count up to 10 again. Release the "Home" button.

    • 5). Click the icon of the iPhone that is in the left section of the iTunes program. Click the "Summary" tab at the top of iTunes.

    • 6). Hold down the "Shift" key and click the "Restore" button at the middle of iTunes. Select "Desktop" from the "Locations" drop-down menu near the center of the window that appears. Click the iPhone operating system file that is on the desktop--it can be seen in the column below "Desktop" on the window. Click the "Open" button at the bottom of the window.

    • 7). Click the "OK" button in the confirmation window that appears. iTunes will now install the iPhone operating system file in the iPhone.

    • 8). Quit iTunes when the confirmation text appears in a panel at the top of the program. Press and hold the "Sleep/Wake" button on the top right of the iPhone. Swipe the slider on the screen when it appears to shut the iPhone down.

    • 9). Disconnect the iPhone from the iPhone connection cable. Disconnect the iPhone connection cable from the USB port of the computer. Press and hold the "Home" button on the iPhone for three seconds to reboot the phone.
