Is Olive or Canola Oil Better?
- According to Dr. Dean Ornish, olive oil lowers cholesterol only when it is substituted for items higher in saturated fat, such as butter. Canola oil is lower in saturated fat than olive oil. While olive oil is a healthier oil than many other choices, it is not as healthy as canola or fish oil.
- Studies show canola oil consumption results in lower levels of LDL cholesterol than olive oil consumption, because canola oil has a smaller amount of saturated fat. Canola oil does not reduce blood flow, as olive oil has been shown to do by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
- Regardless of the oil you choose to use, measure it carefully, because all oils are 100 percent fat and are high in calories. Both olive oil and canola oil are healthy choices compared with other cooking oils, such as butter. However, canola oil is lower in saturated fat and does not reduce blood flow.
