Problem Behaviour - A Guide For Parents

103 15
When confronted with problem behaviour including that linked to ADHD, most parents know that they have a range of options.
Usually at the top of the list comes medication.
That may be followed by diet, exercise, green time, school support and maybe behaviour modification or therapy.
This is a very short sighted approach as behaviour problems can only be solved by adopting some of the techniques associated with behaviour modification.
If there were indeed a pill on the market that could solve problem behaviour, then I would not be writing this article! Baltimore school authorities are now banning for ever kids with problem behaviour convicted of serious crimes such as arson.
Up to 34 students have been permanently expelled from the Baltimore schools in just one academic year.
As a result the numbers of arson and other violent incidents has almost halved in the last year.
Zero tolerance of violence seems to be working.
The same cannot be said of violence in the home which is one of the most serious issues associated with problem behaviour.
The reason is simply that parents have no ability or willingness to come to terms with this and yet it will affect our society because we are failing to rear our children to be well-balanced responsible adults.
Apart from all the violent media delivered to our homes via the Internet, TV and computer games, there is also the violent unsportsmanlike behaviour which is expected of sportspeople everywhere it seems and gives such a bad example to our kids.
Violent, aggressive cursing and swearing and even physical violence mar our sports fields and very often invades our homes.
We should not be surprised if our kids have problem behaviour given the negative influences to which they are exposed.
Why not teach them to play by the rules, respect their opponents, instill self-confidence, praise fair play? It is not much different in many homes across the land.
Cursing defiant behaviour and aggression towards other children is more and more common.
Parents walk on eggshells around their violent children who have problem behaviour but they do not know how to solve the problem.
Problem behaviour can only be addressed by adopting the techniques and strategies of a behaviour therapy program in which children are accountable for their actions and praised or criticized accordingly.
If you refuse to accept problem behaviour as the norm and wish to do something about it, the link below the article will tell you how you can get back in control again.
