Surgical nursing is the treatment and care of patients after they have had surgery. However, the duties of a surgical nurse are not limited to treatment. Surgical nurses often supervise operating room nurses and may serve dual roles as an assistant to surgeons. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, surgical nursing jobs (and other nursing careers) will be high in demand for much of the foreseeable future. While registered nursing certification is a pre-requisite for a career as a surgical nurse, this field often requires training beyond the classroom experience. - The University of San Diego, located in San Diego, California has an academic medical center that offers clinical instruction and a variety of surgeries to public patients. Those interested in pursuing a career in surgical nursing can study orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery or trauma surgery in an environment that encourages the interaction between students and professional medical personnel. Thus, students work and learn alongside surgical physicians, and both surgical and registered nurses teach at the school. The medical center also permits observation and data collection by its students as part of its clinical training process. Prospective surgical nurses must have registered nursing degrees and CPR training before being admitted to the program.

The program provides six semester credits and is designed to instruct surgical nursing students in management and the treatment of diseases and disorders of the body. Students learn to evaluate and diagnose adult and geriatric illnesses in addition to determining the treatment administered to these individuals. The clinical studies segment of the course provides students with up to 11 laboratory hours. For instance, students may research patient information the day before surgical or other clinical procedures and prepare post-clinical or post-surgical treatment plans. Students must maintain a minimum of a "C" grade before taking the course.

All three programs offer courses in pharmacotherapeutics (the effects of drugs and medicines) and pathophysiology (the effect of diseases on the body) with nursing anesthesiology focusing more intensely on anesthetic drugs and the anesthetic methods. Students may join any one of the three nursing organizations on campus: the Multicultural Nursing Student Association, Graduate Nursing Association and the Undergraduate Nursing Student Association.
