When to Sow Lavender Seeds?
- Lavender seeds can be started indoors, starting in late January or early February. It can take up to two weeks for seeds to sprout, and will take two to three months for the plant to develop the proper root system and top growth to withstand transplanting into a container or the garden.
- Seedlings should be started in a quality seed-starting potting mix, at a pH level of 6.5 to 7.5, with good drainage. To help the lavender thrive, place the seedlings on or near the top of the soil and cover lightly. Place plants in a location that maintains a temperature of 70 to 75 degrees. Using a grow light may provide the extra boost that will help the seedlings sprout and avoid rot from too much moisture.
- You can sow lavender seed outdoors after the last frost of the season, in the colder planting zones, when the ground is workable. For warmer zones, lavender seeds can be sown either in spring or fall. You'll want to amend the soil with sand and compost to ensure proper drainage, as lavender is susceptible to rot if the soil is too wet. Lavender seeds should be planted no more than 1/8 inch deep, preferably in full sun.
