Check the moniker, and note that Australian quartet Vomitor are signed to label Hells Headbangers. You know what to expect; Vomitor spews forth a rancid, old school brew of deathly thrash. The band's third LP, The Escalation, is a nostalgic, thoroughly grubby reminder of days of yore (with a corrosive production and kegs of reverential enthusiasm to match).
Reeking of ‘80s rawness—imagine a bestial, bullet-belt-laden blend of Sodom and Slayer stewing in the putrid ooze of Floridian swamp dwellers—The Escalation is a furious and fun trawl through the sub-basements of classic, filthy metal.

Southern Lord’s affinity for metallic crustpunk continues into 2013 with the release of Wartorn’sIconic Nightmare. Wartorn have been sharpening their attack since 2004 and their battle wounds are visible for all to see on this frenetic barrage of politically-charged crust metal in the same lacerated vein as Tragedy, His Hero Has Gone and label-mates Wolfbrigade.
A crude production entrenches these nine tracks that flit by in less than half an hour. It’s the perfect sound/run-time for this record, and armed with the likes of “Unfinished Blueprint” and “All Flags Still Burn” not a moment of aggression is wasted or lost.

Nihaihayat is entirely composed and performed by Emir Togrul, operating under the moniker Yayla. This is the fourth album he’s released in the last 24 months, but it’s far from watered down. Three sprawling and scathing black metal tracks are sandwiched between shorter moody and ambient instrumentals. At times blistering, others punishing,
Yayla’s use of dense atmospherics, lo-fi vocals and repetitive passages makes the album a powerfully hypnotic experience without boring the listener. This is cold and bleak black metal the way I like it. And to think Togrul is from Turkey!
