    Ribbon

    • The Microsoft Office ribbon was introduced in the Office 2007 suite, and it contains all of the tools for creating, formatting and changing your document. You can format your document with the tools listed in the "Home" tab, insert graphics and tables under the "Insert" tab, and generate labels and envelopes under the "Mailings" tab. You can change the reading view, zoom in or out, and control the windows by selecting the options under the "View" tab.

    Templates

    • When creating a commonly used document, such as an invoice or calendar, instead of creating it from scratch you can download a template from Microsoft Office's website. You can select one of many templates by selecting the Office button in the upper left-hand corner, and clicking the "New" button. Under "Office.com Templates" you will see user-submitted and official templates from a reliable source. You can search for templates in the "Search" box in the "Available Templates" window.

    Page Layout

    • You can customize your document layout in the "Page Layout" tab of the ribbon. To stylize your document, you can choose from any of the themes available from the "Themes" button, or create your own combination with the "Colors," "Fonts" and "Effects" buttons. Change the margins, orientation, columns and other document settings in the "Page Setup" section. Alter the indentations and spacing with the "Paragraph" tools and change the arrangement of your text boxes, pictures and clipart with the "Arrange" tools.

    Review

    • Microsoft Word provides many tools to catch problems before printing, emailing or sharing your documents. You can check for spelling and grammar with the "Proofing" tools under the "Review" tab of the ribbon. You can also check the word count, reference a thesaurus and look up a word in a dictionary. If several people are working on the same document you can use "Track Changes" to show each other the changes, corrections and additions you've made to the document.
