Oral nail fungus treatment works about 60 to 75 percent of the time in generally.
It would usually require 9 to 12 months to be able to see if the treatment has been successful in combating the infection or not, since it is how long it would take a new nail to develop.
While the treatment could work efficiently, the infection may reccur about 30 to 50 percent of the time.
Most people generally find creams and other topical medications not effective against nail fungal infection.
This is due to the fact that the nails are too rigid for outer applications to even penetrate.
However, there is a recent development in the form of a medicated nail laquer called ciclopirox topical solution at 8 percent concentration that has been known to cure both finger and toenail infection which does not involve the lunula, or the white part of the nail in individuals with stable immune systems.
The cure is said to have worked only 7% of the time.
The following are oral medicines that are known to be effective against fungal infections in the nails: 1.
Terbinafine, which a medication that is taken orally everyday for a duration of six to eight weeks for infections in the fingers.
For infections in the toenails, the medication is recommended to be taken for over 12 weeks.
This medication is proven safe and effective with only a few ill effects.
Caution in individuals with liver problems must be observed when dealing with this drug.
2.
Griseofulvin, which has been the choice of oral antifungal cure for around many years.
While the medicine is proven safe, it is generally not very effective in combating fungal infections in the toenails.
3.
Itraconazole, which is a drug that is commonly prescribed in pulse doses, usually one peek in a month for two to three months.
Caution should also be observed with this drug as it is known to interact with some commonly used drugs such as antibiotics, ie.
Erythromycin and specific medications for asthma.
4.
Fluconazole is a medication that can be administered once in a week's time for a number of months.
If the patient has an impaired kidney function, the dosing of fluconazole should be modified.
Modification on the dosing is also done when it is taken simultaneously with certain other medicines.
Caution should also be observed when dealing with this drug in patients with issues in the liver.
While oral nail fungus treatment is considered to be the most effective way in managing those nasty nail infections, the serious side effects of these medications is something that should also be considered.
One must weigh the pros and cons of such treatment before deciding which will suit their particular condition best.
