About Privacy Plants

104 12

    Function

    • Privacy plants are most often used to create a screen between neighboring yards or areas. Many people wish to have privacy in their backyards, especially when living close to others. Instead of building unsightly fences, privacy plants are used as a natural and more attractive solution.

    Types

    • There are many types of privacy plants from shrubs and hedges to large grasses, such as bamboo. Of course, faster growing plants are much more desirable for this purpose and these include bamboo, Mahonia Japonica and Nandina. Evergreen shrubs are often popular choices, as well. Even though they are labor intensive, they make a wonderful screen and can be sheered and pruned as necessary. Even small, compact trees, such as Italian Cypress, can be used as privacy plants.
Another popular and attractive idea is to use ivy or other climbing vines as privacy plants. These climbing plants include hops, all types of ivy and clematis. They grow quickly and can attach themselves to a fence.

    Features

    • Features that one should look for in privacy plants include fast growth, lush vegetation and natural tall, narrow growth. Although any plant can technically be used as a privacy plant, some are more effective than others. Bamboo grows thick and clumped, for example, making it difficult to penetrate. As such, this makes it one of the best privacy plants.

    Size

    • The size of privacy plants will vary depending on the plant. Bamboo can reach heights of up to 15 feet, while smaller plants such as Nandina may only grow to be from 18 inches to 8 feet in height. Climbing vine-like plants, such as hops and ivy, do not grow in height but in length, up to 6 m long.

    Benefits

    • Privacy plants will accent the yard or garden if chosen correctly and can add ornament and beauty. They will also hide unsightly fences and yard items from the view of neighbors, while offering a high level of privacy. Using plants to create a privacy screen is economical and the plants can be molded to many different sizes and shapes as needed.
