What Traditional Christmas Plants Are Not Poisonous?

104 8

    Holly

    • Though the colorful red holly berries are poisonous, the leaves themselves are not. Holly branches are used in wreaths and garlands, and sprigs of the shiny, leathery leaves add an attractive trim to candles, packages and napkins rings.

    Poinsettia

    • Poinsettia has long been thought to be highly poisonous, but in fact it has a very low level of toxicity. Chewing a large number of the bracts -- leaves and petals -- may result in some mouth irritation, but overall it is considered to be a nontoxic plant.

    Christmas Orchid

    • The showy lavender Christmas orchid Cattleya trianae is nontoxic. They may be displayed as potted plants, cut flowers or -- if the stems of individual blooms are kept moist in small glass or plastic water tubes -- displayed in wreaths or on the Christmas tree.

    Rosemary

    • Fragrant rosemary is an edible culinary herb. It can be used to add textural contrast in wreaths and garlands. Potted rosemary shrubs are often trimmed and cultured into evergreen-like cone shapes as Christmas decorations.

    Trees

    • Pine trees are nontoxic. Fir trees contain an oil that may cause mild nausea or vomiting but are not considered poisonous. If you have a child or pet with a tendency to chew on plants, check with the seller to determine what pesticides have been used on the trees. Chewing on needles, cones or bark may scratch the mouth and, if they are swallowed, may result in an intestinal blockage.
