Whether you are using to fasten steel panels or wooden panels it is still important that you use the right type of screw.
Screws are also used to secure planks on decks.
In simpler terms, screws have the same function as the nails.
However, screws secure planks better because of its grooved sides that grip onto the wood.
Choosing the right screw is not a problem for experienced carpenter and wood workers, but it can be a daunting task for a first time do-it-yourself carpenter.
True, there are different types of screws and each of these are is designed for a specific purpose.
  • When choosing fasteners you need to consider the thickness of the planks, panels or other materials.
    Two thirds of the length should sink into the wood but should not penetrate the other side.
  • To fasten wood and metal, you may want to make use of a lag screw instead of a flathead screw or roundhead screw.
  • If you are going to secure wood, use wood screws.
  • A pilot hole has to be made before sinking sheet metal screws through thin metal sheets.
    The threads on these fasteners can cut through the pilot hole and securely fastens metal panels against metal panels.
  • When assembling tables, the dowel screw should be used.
    A dowel screw is threaded on both ends thus enabling you to use both ends to attach the various parts of the table like the tabletop and the leg.
  • Sheetrock screws are long and hard fasteners.
    These are perfect for securing wallboards.
  • If you want a set of fasteners that can be used all around the house then you can always purchase a pack or two of utility screws.
    Utility screws are designed to be used on various materials.
