Internet Thermostats

105 214
Are you into high-tech and absolute control? Then internet thermostats are worth looking into.

Internet (or Wi-Fi) control systems for heating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are increasing in popularity, especially among the younger generation and anyone who's Internet savvy. Comparing the €old fashioned€ mechanical thermostats is like comparing a folding patio lounge chair to a high-end Lazy-Boy recliner.

Imagine having complete control of your interior comfort zone from the far end of your home or office to the far-end of the world? As long as you're connected by some means to the 'Net, you're ready to go€¦

The Cost and ROI.

Naturally you'll lay down more cash up front for the higher-tech internet thermostats, but the long term savings on your utility bills along with a likely good return on investment make these systems a great choice (providing you're relatively internet-savvy). As a rule, the majority of manufacturers claim the expected energy savings can easily be up to 20% or higher.

The reasons are obvious.

It's only natural to have more control, options and flexibility using your own, private control website than you could ever squeeze into a smaller hand-held control device or wall unit. And for even more convenience, there's even €an app for that€, turning your smart phone into a €smart remote€.

Super convenience.

From your bedroom, vehicle, office or anywhere around the planet - you can control and program your HVAC system in numerous ways such as:

€ Time(s) to cycle on and off during the day;
€ Days of the week scheduling;
€ Various timed settings;
€ Multiple sub-settings;
€ Vacation settings and more.

Alert messaging options: You may set these up for receiving alerts via email, text or both to advise you of any malfunctions or power outages so that you can stay on top of the game!

Internet thermostat HVAC control systems operations.

For the sake of space we'll keep it simple. Although plenty of options are available, most typically include the following:

1) Wireless internet module.
This plugs into a local receptacle and connects to your internet modem via an Ethernet cable and communicates between your internet service provider (IP) and HVAC control system. It's normally compatible with any IP service such as DSL, cable or satellite. Dial up service is not typically compatible unless modified to be always on.

2) Sensor unit.
This module(s) is placed in a central, logical area of your home or office and acts as the electronic control thermostat. It senses the temperature variations in regards to your desired settings and transmits the data to the receiver€¦

3) Receiver unit:
This module is placed on or close to your actual HVAC system for the purpose of receiving the data transitions and converting them over to mechanical action to turn the system on or off as called for.

Additional options may include multiple sensors for different areas of the dwelling depending on the HVAC's zoning capabilities, along with an array of remote control devices. As with anything electronic, scores of options and features are available, depending on your individual needs, tastes and budget.

A few more benefits.

You can easily set/adjust/program your system electronically and remotely to be the most efficient and comfortable living or work environment. This is especially useful for the forgetful and the travelers (and the €forgetful travelers€)! If you ever leave your home and forget to adjust your HVAC settings for your absence, no worries. You can easily do this from any online-connected computer or smart phone, and with pinpoint accuracy.

In conclusion.

Prices are higher than for other HVAC control devices and and there are many brands and models to choose from. However, if such a system is not in your budget or you're simply not that internet savvy, take heart, as there are still some great alternatives. My next recommendation would be a less expensive programmable electronic thermostat. The main objective is pre-programming and automation to save the most on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
