How to Make Kitchen Cutting Boards
- 1). Cut your hardwood board down to measure 8 by 15 inches using a simple table saw. This will allow you to create a cutting board with a handle measuring approximately 3 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide, and a cutting surface measuring approximately 11 by 7 inches.
- 2). Draw the cutting outline for your cutting board. Start by sectioning off one end that measures exactly 10 7/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches. Draw straight lines using the edge of your carpenter's square. Use the pencil compass to round all corners of the cutting surface by setting the compass to a radius of 1/2 inch; erase any marks outside of the rounded corners.
- 3). Locate the center of the opposite end of the cutting board, by measuring in 3 5/8 inches on one of the short ends. Make a small mark at this point, approximately 3/4 inch from the end of the board. This marks the location of the cutting board's hanging hole.
- 4). Draw the outline for your cutting board's handle by drawing two parallel lines on either side of the hanging hole. These parallel lines should intersect and run perpendicular to the rounded rectangle you drew in the second step. Use the pencil compass to round the end of the handle by setting the compass to a radius of 3/4 inch. Round corners where the handle and cutting section of the board intersect by setting the compass to a radius of 1 inch.
- 5). Cut the cutting board out of the hardwood piece by following the cutting lines you drew in the previous steps. Use a jig saw to cut the curved corners of the board.
- 6). Drill a 1/4-inch hole into the end of the cutting board, on the mark you drew in Step 3.
- 7). Sand the top bottom and all edges of the cutting board until all surfaces feel smooth. Wipe away sanding dust with a tack cloth.
