Stuttering is a common speech disorder especially in children. Characterized by the repetitions of word syllables, it can be acquired when a person did not have enough training while still learning his native language or can also be caused when someone has suffered from a brain damage. Most children tend to outgrow stuttering once they are already past their toddler years but some retain the disorder even until puberty.

There are a couple of ways which can be done to stop stuttering. Basically, this disorder is diagnosed by a speech-language pathologist who is a professional in treating people's language, voice, and speech disorders. In determining the best method to stop stuttering, a speech pathologist first considers a variety of factors like the case history, stuttering behaviors, and speech and language abilities of the patient. As for the case of young children, it is recommended that they be given early treatment to stop their stuttering disorders. One common tip which can help stop stuttering is by giving a child a relaxed home environment in which he can comfortably and easily speaks. It is also important for parent to not give negative reactions whenever a child stutters. For example, the parents can ask the child to share the activities he did for the day during dinner as a speech exercise.

Giving negative reactions whenever a child stammers should be avoided because this can only worsen the problem. Instead, practice to speak in a relaxed and slow manner to help reduce the pressure on the child's part. Whenever children with stutters are speaking, the parents should also wait for them to finish the sentence instead of completing it for them. Lastly, the most important and effective way to stop stuttering, is to assure the child that it is okay for stammering to occur and that it can be solved if he continues to practice his speaking skills.
