Guide for Juicers

    Citrus Juicers

    • Citrus juicers are just that---juicers designed specifically for citrus fruits---namely oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits. Half the fruit is pressed down onto a spinning cone, similar to hand juicers, and the juice is strained to remove seeds and pulp. This juicer is quick and easy to use, especially since it doesn't require peeling the fruit. However it cannot be used on anything but citrus fruits. Electric citrus juicers range in price from $20 to $50.

    Centrifugal Juicers

    • Centrifugal juicers work by feeding fruit via a tube into a spinning basket. The basket grates and chops the fruit, which releases the juice. The centrifugal force of the spinning then forces the juice outwards where it drains down and is strained. This method is quick, but it can't be used for wheatgrass or other greens. It also has a lower output than masticating juicers. Centrifugal juicers generally cost between $75 and $200.

    Upright Masticating Juicers

    • Upright masticating juicers send the fruit through several steps. First it is crushed, then pressed before being strained. By not extracting the pulp until the end, it is continuously juiced for a maximum return. This juicer can be used on virtually any fruit and vegetable, often also on leaves and grasses, depending on the model. The upright model also leaves a small footprint on your counter, leaving space for other appliances. Upright masticating juicers generally cost between $200 and $400.

    Twin Gear Juicers

    • Twin gear juicers work by pressing the food between two interlocking roller gears. This method produces the highest volume of juice of all types of machines. They work slowly, but this produces a juice that has a longer shelf life than other juicers. It can be used on any type of fruit as well as grasses and leaves. Twin gear juicers are the most expensive models available, ranging from $400 to $800.
