Ground beef for many households is a dinner time staple. It can be used to make a variety of foods, such as hamburgers, meatloaf, tacos, stuffed peppers, casseroles, and more. However, eating too much can be bad for you, since it is relatively high in fat. By switching to ground turkey, you can enjoy the same great recipes you've always enjoyed, but with considerably less fat, making it much more heart healthy.

Many people are reluctant to try ground turkey. True, it doesn't taste exactly like ground beef. But that doesn't mean it isn't great tasting just the same and can't be used in all of your favorite recipes. There are many nutritional benefits to switching and if you are concerned about fat and cholesterol your doctor may have even already suggested to you that you do it. If you absolutely can't stand the idea of switching to turkey, then you should at least be on the look out for lean ground beef. Ground beef is often sold in different types, with 70/100 having the highest fat content and 90/100 or even 95/100 if you can find it having the least amount of fat. Buying the reduced fat and leaner varieties can help you improve your health and diet.

Ground turkey is available in many grocery stores, often located with the rest of the meats in the meat department. It can be frozen as well, which makes it great for having some stored in the freezer for last minute dinner ideas or if you don't have a lot of time to cook.

Here are Some Tips to Help You Make the Transition to Ground Turkey:

Start half and half: There's no rule that says you can't start by cooking half ground beef, half ground turkey. This can be one easy way to slowly transition to the taste of turkey in your meals. Ground turkey will often cook a little faster than regular ground beef because it is leaner, so you may want to start browning the ground beef a few minutes ahead of time.

Substitute One Meal a Week: If you are new to ground turkey, it's best to start off slowly to get used to it. You can substitute just one meal a week, then later progress to two meals a week or more with the ground turkey instead of the ground beef.

Seasoning, Seasoning, Seasoning: You can season ground turkey just like you would ground beef. You don't have to make turkey taste like Thanksgiving dinner every time you have it! You'd be surprised how great tasting turkey tacos can be!

Try New Recipes: You can make just about anything with ground turkey that you would make with ground beef. Spaghetti, tacos, and even hamburgers can all be delicious with turkey! Don't be afraid to try new things, and chances are if its something new, you may not even notice the difference between the turkey and regular ground beef.

Making the switch to ground turkey doesn't have to be a chore or mean you have to sacrifice taste and quality of your meals. Learning a few easy turkey recipes and including them in your meal plans once a week or more can greatly have a positive difference in your health and your diet.
