Bathing Your New Puppy

103 276
Bathing your puppy is going to be a brand new experience for him.
To avoid frightening him half to death please avoid using a spray for the first few baths.
For a large dog you can bath him in your bathtub.
A smaller dog will fit in your kitchen sink very nicely.
Put a rubber mat on the bottom of the tub so your puppy will not lose his footing and slip.
The bathing session is a great time to check the puppy for any skin rashes, scaly areas or crusts.
Watch for fleas.
Get your puppy ready for his bath by gently brushing out his coat.
A small tangle will develop into a large mat when the coat becomes wet.
Have the bath water warm but not hot, then slowly wet your puppy's body down starting at the tail and working toward the head.
Use a good dog shampoo as a dog's skin is more alkaline than ours and requires a different pH balance.
You can put a drop of mineral oil in each eye to keep the shampoo from irritating his eyes.
Pour some shampoo along the puppies back and then work up a good lather making sure to include the pup's legs, feet and tail.
Wash his head last and be careful not to get shampoo or water in his eyes, nose, month or ears.
Clean his head with a wash cloth if possible using only a small amount of shampoo.
When his bath is over be sure to dry him well to keep him from becoming chilled.
You can use a blow dryer at a low, warm setting.
Having lots of towels handy goes without saying.
The earlier your puppy becomes accustomed to being bathed, the easier it will be on both of you.
His first bath should be while he is still young, small and manageable.
Patience and praise will go a long way in making bath time an enjoyable experience for you and your puppy.
