The automotive industry makes up an enormous part of our economy and has been said to employ one out of every seven individuals. The need for ongoing maintenance and repair of the nearly 200 million vehicles currently in operation has created a unique opportunity for auto technicians to start and expand their careers in the industry. While it can take many years for a technician to master all of the skills required to be a well-rounded technician, there are relatively few hurdles to entering the profession.

Individuals who want to become automotive technicians are encouraged to start exploring the opportunities available to them while they are still in High School. Many schools offer vocational courses in automotive services technology and can arrange for students to complete internships in local auto shops. This is also a great time to get involved in the Automotive Youth Educational Services (AYES) organization. This agency can do a lot to help advance a career as an auto technician and offers a few generous scholarships to students who intend to pursue post-secondary education in the industry.

The next best period of life to consider entering the auto repair industry is right after High School graduation. There are many post-secondary educational programs in automotive service technology available through local vocational schools, community colleges, and universities. These programs provide opportunities to complete Certificate Programs, Associate's Degrees, and Bachelor's Degrees. A variety of training options have been created to allow all individuals to advance their careers regardless of time constraints.

Formal educational courses in the auto industry have been designed to give students the skills they need to be successful technicians and to teach them in a way that prepares them to become certified. Many employers prefer to hire technicians who have completed the certification process offered through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). This organization is nationally recognized as the standard for auto technician competence assessment and they offer certification exams in all eight of the core automotive competencies.

Individuals who become certified in the eight core competencies including engine repair, automatic transmissions, manual drive trains, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance attain the status of Master Technician. Anyone who wants to become a specialist in electrical systems will likely need to become proficient, at a basic level, in each of these categories before specializing. Obtaining certification in each category also gives a technician far more job opportunities and will likely result in higher pay.

As our population continues to grow, it is anticipated that the need for qualified auto technicians will increase. The fact that there are thousands of new vehicles hitting the streets every day means that there will be many opportunities for an auto electrician to advance their career in the future. Given the bright outlook for automotive technicians, there has never been a better time to consider a career in the auto industry.
