103 17
Because of the recent tragic death of football star Sean Taylor due to a home invasion, more people are reading home security articles and are showing more interest in taking precautions to prevent the same happening to them.
Many of these people will buy a new home security door lock that is an upgrade from their current lock.
When reading home security articles, several themes will be common to most of them.
Having a good home security lock on every exterior door and keeping them locked is universal.
Many will also recommend using alarms and home security services, but locks are the obvious first line of defense.
Even the most modern, up to date locks are useless if they are left open.
Make sure that everyone in the family has a key and uses it every time they leave the house.
And burglars know all the places you might hide a key.
Don't use a fake rock or a "convenient" door frame.
You might consider leaving an emergency spare with a neighbor instead.
The different types of locks and how safe they are is mentioned often in home security articles.
Old locks with skeleton keys are not great or safe, but it is also easy to defeat many modern locks also.
If it's possible to break your lock with a credit card, then anyone can.
A security lock is only as good as its box which needs to be anchored securely in the door frame using 3" screws or nails or larger.
Make sure it is rated "kick proof" and that the bolt itself is at least 1 1/2 "long.
If there is window glass near the location of the lock, a special type of lock is required which can't be opened just by breaking the glass and reaching in to turn the lock.
Before installing a new lock, be sure to check the local building codes to make sure you're within the code.
Many home security articles have been written regarding safety measures you should take if you're at home and your safety system fails.
The best method is to hide in a closet with a cell phone and immediately call 911.
If you have no opportunity to hide and are faced with intruders, make sure you never look them directly in the eye.
Try to notice as many things about them as you can without obviously staring at them.
However, the bottom line is that it's better not to have to deal with this situation at all by having high quality locks installed correctly before the problem happens.
