How to Teach Strength Training Classes

    • 1). Know each client's medical history as it concerns his ability to participate in physical activity and what health issues he has. Always know what type of medical condition, if any, that a client has. You must know to choose exercises that will be of most benefit to the client and present the least chance of injury.

    • 2). Choose exercises that clients will gain benefit from, no matter what levels of experience they have. Select exercises (and machines) that the beginner as well as the advanced client can perform. The exercises should provide gains in strength and general fitness.

    • 3). Build up to a satisfactory weight for each client. No matter where a client starts in terms of fitness, start the strength training with lower weight and higher repetition to build, tone and get the body prepared for lifting higher amounts of weight at a lower number of repetitions.

    • 4). Emphasize form on each exercise. Executing proper form is the primary means of preventing injury. Proper form also yields the most benefit from the hard work done in the fitness facility. Keep your client's attention fixed on the exercise and her body.

    • 5). Stretch before and after every work-out, both to prepare the body for the work-out and to maintain flexibility afterwards. If you don't emphasize stretching before working out, you don't give the body a chance to loosen up and become prepared to do the hard work. It will cultivate fertile ground for injury if you ignore the need to warm up.
