Experts are predicting that 20% of America's electricity will come from wind power by 2030, compare with the fact that just 1% comes from wind today.
That leaves a lot of room for growth.
Many industry insiders are banking on this growth which will see small companies have long term growth in the alternative energy sector.
Studies conducted by the U.
S Department of Energy came to the conclusion, that wind from the Great Plains states of Kansas, North Dakota and Texas could provide enough electricity to power the entire United States.
There are numerous feisty micro and small cap companies with big ideas, but only the more ingenious will be able to compete with bigger and more established European counter parts who have a considerable head start.
One interesting take on the concept is dual usage of the land.
Wind Here Enterprises is a good example of being smart.
The company looks to not only develop wind farms to harness the wind but looks to co-locate these farms with commercial businesses, thus maximizing cash flow on each project.
To this end, the company has recently acquired it first development project in Floresville, Texas.
It would seem that the location was not chosen by accident, as Texas is not only the biggest wind power generating state but is also situated in the wind belt of the Great Plains.
Wind Here is developing a wind farm on property that hosts an established motocross speedway drawing thousands of fans, spectators and competitors each week.
The company believes that these dual uses will not only provide energy solutions but will also produce revenue streams from commercial recreational and sporting activities in rural.
It will be these sort of initiative's that ease high entry costs and protect a companies long term sustainability when competing against opponents that are bigger and more experienced.
But make no mistake, humans have been using wind power for a long time and it looks as if wind power may be entering a golden age and be part of the solution to our dependence on fossil fuels.
