CARING FOR YOUR CANVAS

The best way to care for your canvas blinds, umbrellas, and outdoor furniture is to use them, lt is only when you store them away that you have to contend with mildew stains and other damage. During winter, unroll your awnings and umbrellas occasionally to check for dampness - this will prevent any mildew forming.

Always have rips and tears, however small, repaired immediately - you can do this yourself with a patch of canvas on either side of the hole fastened in place with fabric cement. Large tears should be repaired by an expert. If you've had your canvas goods for a few years, check stitching on seams for signs of weakening rest itching will prolong product's life.

Awnings Smolder

Cigarette butts dropped by guests at the Hotel Melbourne destroy the canvas awnings of Martin Place shops twice a year. Many lighted butts fall on to the awnings when guests toss them from their bedroom windows. The butts burn through the awnings, which quickly become riddled with holes. The hotel management replaces the awnings rather than ask guests not to throw cigarette butts from their windows.

Owing to the inadequacy of many of the awnings to carry of water, it fall in sheets into the streets after heavy falls of rain. It surely must be in the Melbourne people's power to require the owners of property to keep the gutters in repair, in ageing that the association should interest itself in the matter. Now all new awnings had to be constructed on the cantilever principle, all existing awnings should be made to conform within, say, five years.
