How to Install a Push-Button Door Switch
- 1). Place the push-button switch on the wall beside the entry door from the house to the garage. Ideally you want to mount the switch 5-feet above the floor. Mark the mounting hole locations with a pencil.
- 2). Drill holes where you made your pencil marks with a bit that is the same size as your plastic wall anchors. Tap the wall anchors into the holes in the wall.
- 3). Loosen the two screws on the inside back of the door switch with a Phillips-head screwdriver one full turn. Split the two wires on one end of the bell wire with a utility knife. There are two wires separated by a small groove in the insulation. Split the wires 2 inches down. Bend the ends to make small hooks. Remove 1/4 inch of insulation from each wire end with a pair of wire strippers.
- 4). Place one wire end on each terminal screw on the push button and tighten the terminal screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Place the push button over the wall anchors, with the notch for the bell wire pointing up. Position the bell wire into the notch and secure the push button to the wall with the retaining screws.
- 5). Fasten the wire to the wall and ceiling with insulated staples and a hammer, until the opposite end of the wire is over the back of the garage door opener motor. Follow as straight a path as possible from the push button to the garage door opener, using a stepladder to reach the ceiling. Use staples at each corner and every 6 inches down the length of the wire.
- 6). Position your stepladder under the garage door opener and unplug the power cord from the ceiling outlet. Locate the terminals for the push button wire on the back of the garage door opener. Some openers have two screws while newer models have a small block of quick-connect terminals. Quick connects are a block of four to six holes with small tabs above each hole.
- 7). Allow the end of the bell wire to hang behind the motor and cut the wire even with the bottom of the motor head with the wire strippers. Split the end of the wire 2 inches and remove 1/4 inch of insulation from each wire end with the wire strippers.
- 8). Press the far right quick-connect tabs with your fingers, if your opener uses quick connects. Insert the wire ends into the two far right holes, and release the tabs to secure the wires. If you have terminal screws, loosen the screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Bend the ends of the wire into a hook and place the wires around the screws. Tighten the screws to secure the wire.
- 9). Plug the garage door opener power cord into the ceiling outlet. The push button should illuminate. Push the button to operate the garage door opener.
