Here are some guidelines to help you prepare your home for the floor sanding and finishing process. By reading the information below, you can help achieve the best and most beautiful result for your timber floor. Most clients already appreciate the effort needed to clear the premises from all furniture and household items prior to work commencing. Unfortunately, this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as being prepared for the successful completion of the floor sanding and polishing process.

Over the years, I have experienced and witnessed many preventable problems that have resulted in a poor floor finish and that have extended the completion time of the job when floor sanding northern beaches. The following article will not only help me as a contractor, but also the you, the consumer, to prevent problems that may, and have, occurred during the floor sanding and finishing process.

The information that will follow has been collected from many sources including the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), the Australian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA), the Australian Department of Fair Trading, and many years of practical experience when producing finished timber floors and floor polishing northern beaches.

What to do prior to the arrival of our team:
  • Remove all furniture from the rooms that are to be sanded and finished. This includes fridges, dishwashers, paintings or any other items in the area. No liability or claims will be accepted for damage to any items that remain not only in the areas worked in but also the areas that will need to be passed through in order to complete the contract (hallways, etc.).
  • Remove all existing floor coverings including, carpet, smooth edge, staples, vinyl, etc. Please note that the quote may include this service.
  • Please ensure all electrical power points and lights are functioning in all rooms to be worked on. Please do not expect to have 1 power lead from 1 source (ex. - the power box on new developments). This is not an adequate power requirement to run the high powered equipment needed to sand your floors. Adequate lighting in all rooms to be worked on is also required in order to produce the desired result.
  • Have your driveway clear and ready to accept our vehicles so unloading and access may be available at all times throughout the entire process.
  • As a condition of work cover and practices it is required that toilet facilities are made available within your home or business.
  • Please secure your animals and pets at all times during the entire time it takes to complete the work. This includes after the contractor has left for the day, evenings when you may be permitted to return to a limited area of your house, during the entire sanding process and when the floor is still in the drying process. No responsibility or liability will be accepted for any loss or damage that occurs to the floors as a result of animals or pets allowed to access the areas to be work on at any time during the process.
  • No access to the areas worked will be allowed at any time by anyone other than the floor contractor. This includes the owners, builders, and other tradesman. This means no person is to enter the areas worked on until completion. If you choose to inhabit the premises surrounding the areas to be worked, it becomes the client's responsibility to ensure all measures are taken to secure the areas and premises after contractors leave.
  • It is the owners, clients, or builder responsibility to secure all windows, doors, gates, etc. during the work contracted.
  • Please ensure the premises are secure from water leaks. We will take no responsibility for damage caused by homes affected by water leaks or excessive moisture within or under the premises. This will include any damage or reaction to floor finishes that occur as a result of moisture present within the home during, prior to, or after the work has been completed.
  • Please leave all window coverings on windows. This will protect the floor finishes from the sun during the finishing process. If your home does not have window coverings, or if you have curtains that touch the floor, please contact me for information on how to best find solutions that allow for successful completion of the work.

It is the owner's responsibility to keep doors and windows closed during the drying times. Any opening and closing of doors that allow dust, hair, etc. to enter the area worked on will not be the responsibility of the contractor.
