The days that people bring new friends home from a pet shop or rescue center are always filled with laughter and joy. Pets can make us feel important and have been medically proven to improve people's mental health, but sometimes pets can cause real health problems for the people who love them. Together doctors and scientists have performed studies that have reported that close to fifteen percent of people suffer from allergies to animals. Some people only find out about their allergies after they have brought a pet into their home and on average only about one in five decided to find another home for their pet while the other four find other ways to deal with their allergy symptoms. If you are one of those unlucky people who suspect their pet could be the cause of their illness there are a few options that may enable you to keep your pet and decrease the amount of symptoms you are suffering. Here are a few things you should consider before trying to find another home for your new friend.

The very first thing you need to do is make sure it truly is your pet that is causing your irritation and not just another allergen that was introduced into your environment at the same time. Pollen is one of the most common allergens in the United States. Pets that live both inside and outside often bring pollen into homes on their feet and fur. There is a good chance that you are reacting to the pollen that is being brought in by your pet and not your pet themselves. The best way to determine whether or not you are allergic to your test is for you to visit your doctor and have them perform an allergy test. This simple test will identify exactly what causes your symptoms. If you find out that you are allergic to pollen and other allergens being brought into your home by your pet you can easily remedy this problem by bathing your pet weekly.

If your allergy test reveals that you are truly allergic to your new friend, all hope is not lost. The allergens released by pets come from a secretion of proteins from your pet's skin that attaches to your pets fur or hair. Some people have allergies to pets that are not life threatening so these simple steps can be taken to help reduce their exposure to the proteins that cause allergy symptoms. If you suffer from allergies you should avoid letting your pet sleep in your bed. Turn you bedroom into a pet free sanctuary. Spend time with your pet in the other areas of your home but keep your bedroom free of pet allergens.

To help filter out any allergens that might come into your room on your clothes you should install an air filtration system with high performing filters to keep the air quality in your pet free room clean. Installing air filtration throughout your home will also help you reduce your exposure to pet allergens. A simple but effective way to reduce your contact is to make sure you wash your hands immediately after playing with your pet. Finally, removing all materials from the area of your home where your pet will be living that might attract pet hair will help you keep your home pet hair free. Some of the best examples of these items include curtains, carpet, and rugs.
