How to Water a Tricolor Beech Tree
- 1). Rake the area under the tricolor beech tree until it is free of old mulch, leaves and other debris.
- 2). Lay a soaker house 1 foot beyond the drip line, completely surrounding the tree. Lay additional soaker hoses every 2 inches toward the tree, stopping 3 feet from the trunk.
- 3). Cover the soaker hoses with soil, mulch or other material that will keep it out of the sun and from being dislodged.
- 4). Water the tricolor beech tree when the top 4 inches of soil is dry. To determine how long to run the soaker hose, turn the water on and allow it to run for 40 minutes. Use a trowel to dig a hole into the root zone near each hose to determine if the soil is moist. If not, run the soaker hoses an additional 20 minutes and check again. When the soil is moist around the roots you will know how long to run the soaker hoses during subsequent irrigations. How quickly the soil dries out is dependent upon soil type and weather, so check the soil periodically, especially during hot and windy conditions.
- 5). Withhold water from November to March unless the weather is particularly dry.
