Exploring the Film Making Industry of Berlin

103 28
There is no denying that Berlin, Germany, is one of the most interesting and 'cool' cultural capitals of Europe.
With the city seeming to live and breathe creativity throughout its streets, it is no wonder that it is such a great destination for university trips focusing on the arts.
The city of Berlin has a great history of film making with an abundance of independent film houses all over the city.
At one time the Ku'damm area boasted a total of 22 cinemas! With the influx of major multiplex movie cinemas, the number of independent film houses has been on decline since the early 90s; but this seems to have stabilised in the past few years and filmmaking is still a big industry in the city.
While you are in Berlin, you should make sure to visit the Berlin Film Museum, the Filmpark Bablesberg, and the Lichtblick Kino.
Berlin Film Museum - Located in the architecturally impressive Sony Centre at Potsdamer Platz is the Berlin Film and Television Museum and the German Film Archive.
University trips focusing on cinema will be certain to take students through the 13 halls, with over 1,000 exhibits that range from costumes and props, to movie sets and examples of historical and technological developments in the world of film making.
While at the Berlin Film Museum, be sure that you don't miss out on the exhibits especially dedicated to Marlene Dietrich, Germany's "Greatest Diva", and the historical exodus of the acting greats to Hollywood.
Filmpark Bablesberg - Located in Potsdam-Bablesberg, the Bablesberg Film Studio is a must see for any young cinema buffs on university trips.
Founded in 1912, it is the oldest large-scale film studio in the world, and in 2012 the studio will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
With about 25,000 square metres of property, the Bablesberg Film Studio, a big-budget venue, has played a role in many of the major films that are released yearly such as: Metropolis (1927), The Pianist (2002), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and Hanna (2011).
While at the park you can see shows, stunt events, film locations, dine at one of the restaurants or cafes, and maybe get to see some live filming taking place.
Lichtblick Kino - Once you've learned about the history of German Film at the Berlin Film Museum, and visited the largest working film park in the world at Brablesberg, for well rounded film making university trips, you should head the Lichtblick Kino to see a small, independent film house in action.
As the smallest movie theatre in Berlin, the Lichtblick Kino has only one tiny screening room with several rows of seats.
Here you can settle in to watch some artsy films by trendsetting directors, or see foreign films in their original language.
If you are lucky, you will be able to book a seat to get a taste of the Italian Neo-realism, the New Hollywood Movement, or even some of the more artistic films by German directors.
