Tea comes from the plant called Camellia sinensis and is made from the buds and leaves. Many different teas are made from these leaves but are processed in different manners to achieve the different tastes. It comes from tropical or sub-tropical climates and varies dependent on the climate and elevation. When processed, the leaves and buds are ground down and can be added to boiled water to release the various flavors. Tea is a globally popular drink and while being made up of mainly water, there are often other ingredients added. A number of health benefits have been associated with regular tea consumption.

Drinking tea is widely regarded to hold anti-cancer properties due to the antioxidants and polyphenols in tea. Research in this area has been a hot topic for many years but certain types of tea (commonly known as Green Teas) are believed to hold cancer fighting properties. Antioxidants are known to help improve oxygen intake and reinforce the immune system. They are also known to help reduce the chances of getting certain types of cancer.

A lot of conjecture will tell you that drinking caffeine will act as a diuretic. However, this theory is false. While caffeine in high doses will do this, it is only in doses much greater than that found in even the strongest cup of tea. A very strong cup of tea will still have a net gain of water for the human body. As the human body gets older, fluid intake becomes more and more important. Drinking of tea can have a positive effect on your water levels. After exercise when fluid levels are low, this extra boost of water will have a positive impact on your health.

A major problem for a lot of people looking to lose weight is having a suppressed metabolism. Drinking tea regularly can help increase metabolism, particularly when you consume green tea. A study of green tea consumption and exercise concluded that an extra 70 calories could be burned during exercise if the tea had been taken earlier in the day. This caloric burn is the equivalent of a slow 15 minute walk each day.

A long term study of drinking tea also suggests that regular consumption can help unclog arteries and keep the passages to the heart free from cholesterol. Other benefits such as occasional increase in bone strength and the fact that tea is a calorie free alternative to other drink, makes tea consumption a wise choice. Tea also increases the effectiveness of our immune systems. However, this has been widely suggested but not thoroughly researched.

While the types of tea available is incredibly wide ranging, some have a strong impact on your overall health and well-being. Having cancer beating and metabolic properties the majority of the drink is made up of water so is an excellent choice for re-hydration - a key component of overall health and fitness.
