    • 1). Estimated yearly operating cost. The first figure to strike the eye is the ENERGY STAR estimate of how much it costs to run the appliance on an annual basis. The scale below provides two points of reference - lower cost on the left, and higher cost on the right. This is the cost range for similar models. Depending on the appliance, the estimated yearly operating cost falls somewhere in between. The idea is to get as close to the lower end of the scale as possible for maximum energy conservation and savings. Note this is only an estimate - actual figures depend on utility rates and use.

    • 2). Estimated yearly electricity use. This figure tells you how much energy your new appliance uses in kilowatt hours (kWh) on an annual basis. One kilowatt hour equals the amount of energy used if work is performed at a perpetual rate of 1,000 watts for one hour. Thus, the kilo (1,000) watt (energy) hour.

The The U.S. Department of Energy recommends multiplying this number on the sticker with the local electricity rate on your electric bill to get an idea of how much you may be paying. Note the disclaimer at the bottom of the sticker: "Estimated operating cost based on a national average electricity cost of (x number of) cents per kWh." The DOE's estimate is a lagging indicator and does not reflect current utility rates, which now average around 13-16 kWh. Therefore you will likely be paying an amount higher than this figure reflects.

    • 3). Appliance type and features. At the top left of the ENERGY GUIDE label is a description of the appliance. Read the features carefully to get a good feel for what you are buying.

    • 4). Manufacturer, model, and capacity (size). The top right of the ENERGY STAR label explains who manufactured the appliance, its specific model number, and the capacity or size of the unit. Compare the size with your current appliance to make sure it suits your needs and can fit into the space.
