How to Market a Cartoon Script

104 7
    • 1). Create a pitch book to show your work to potentially interested parties. You will be leaving this behind for reference when you're done with your presentation. Include a brief synopsis of your concept and a story treatment, which is a more in-depth explanation of your show. Present a strong theme supported by visuals that drive home the ideas and feelings behind your script. Prepare a pilot script and an outline for 13 episodes.

    • 2). Research current marketing directories to find businesses that accept scripts and cartoon submissions. While directories can be expensive, some are available at your local library. Examples include the "Standard Periodical Directory," which lists magazines, and the "Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market," a compilation of artist markets such as greeting card publishers, magazines and advertising agencies that also includes cartoonist resources.

    • 3). Visit prospective clients' websites to find their submission guidelines. Use search terms such as "writers guidelines" and "contributor guidelines" to unearth further resources. Contact companies that accept pitches and ask if they consider animated proposals. Many companies have less stringent guidelines for animation than for live action screenplays; less established writers have a better chance of being considered in the animation field. Prepare a query letter -- a single page overview to entice interest in the concept -- which often is the first step in the pitch process.

    • 4). Perfect your presentation, and get feedback from rejections. Use criticism to help you understand what the market is looking for. Be confident and don't promote your idea until you fully believe in its viability.

    • 5). Network with other professionals, both online and in person. Hand out business cards, make contacts, join forums and newsletters and keep in touch with peers who have similar goals and interests. Continue pitching your work while you soak up as much knowledge as possible.
