The Use of Natural Lighting

104 13

    Advantages

    • If you decide to use natural lighting you won't have to carry around all the equipment that you would have to if you were using artificial lighting. This means you can cover more ground as a photographer as you won't have heavy equipment to hold you back.

    Easier to Use

    • Natural lighting can be easier to use and it removes many of the problems you might have lighting a subject using artificial lighting. What you see is what you get. If you are happy with it, then take your picture; if not, you don't have to adjust countless settings, you simply move the subject until you are happy with it.

    Manipulating Light

    • You may feel slightly powerless, as your pictures rely heavily upon the light doing what you want it two; however, you can regain some power by using reflectors. These allow you to manipulate the direction of natural light to help you better light a subject.

    Soft and Diffused

    • Ambient lighting can also be very flattering on a model in comparison to harsh studio lighting, as it is soft and diffused and does not make your model squint. It can also add a more natural look to your pictures that is hard to achieve using artificial lighting.

    Disadvantages

    • The main disadvantage of using natural light is the loss of control. Even if you decide to use a reflector you still have nowhere near as much control as you would if you were using artificial lighting, which gives you full control over the image.

    The Weather

    • As much as you would like to, you simply can't control the weather. If the sky is overcast or it is raining there won't be as much sunlight to light your images and this can often leave your picture looking dull.

    Night Time

    • You can also struggle at night. As there is less light you may be forced to rely on street lights or car headlights. The lack of light also means that you might have to use a slower shutter speed than you want and would also mean that you would need a tripod to steady your shot.
