Coming Home - 5 Tips and Tricks for the Triathlon Run
You see it in every race, strong runners plowing through the field to take home a victory while others are stuck on the side of the road...
for the run, training is more important than anything else and being able to outrun your competition is the key to a successful race.
Here are five triathlon training tips that will help you crush your next run...
1) Fluids - The intake of calories and fluids is necessary for any successful endurance event! It is easy to trick yourself while you are on the bike that everything is fine, you have some wind moving keeping you cool and aren't getting too hot, but when you get off your bike your body heats up and if you don't drink enough fluids and calories during the bike (when you have access to them) your body may shut down during the run.
2) Bricks - sure you can go out and run every single day for multiple hours, but every day you go out for the run, your legs are fresh and ready to go...
in a triathlon, you've already completed a long swim and long bike (at race speeds) before you set foot on the run course.
The only real way to experience race conditions is to complete bricks - we suggest at least one every other week.
3) Confidence - You can do it! If someone passes you on the bike, don't change your race plan, race your race and know...
you'll catch them on the run.
4) Limits - Keep a level head and don't push too hard on race day...
it's difficult but you've put in the hours for this race and should have a good idea where you will fall in the rankings.
If you find yourself pushing 3 or 4 miles per hour faster on the bike, your run (and overall time) might pay for it later...
you don't need to slow down, but you need to be aware of your pace and how to adjust it.
5) The Bike - huh? How can the bike help me get a better run? Think about it, when you complete a long bike workout (longer than your expected race clock time) you are actually adding in run training.
This extra effort will help you make sure you have the energy to excel at the run.
