Extreme Life Extension:
Is it possible to live to 120 years-old? Dr. Oz joined Oprah wearing scrubs to share the latest medical technology to extend life to the extreme. With advances in medicine alongside strategies with nutrition and exercise, it is likely that some people will be able to go into the second century of their life with vitality and continued youth.
Calorie Restriction:
Dr. Oz introduced viewers to Joe, who may be the first man to live to see 150. At 5'9" and 130 pounds, Joe practices a diet called calorie restriction - eating just 1950 calories a day. Calorie restriction is not about starving yourself or just eating a pizza or bag of chips for the day, but about choosing foods that give the most nutritional value while keeping calories below average.
For breakfast, Joe eats a bowl that consists of the peel of 3 apples, blueberries, raspberries and walnuts. For lunch, 3 pounds of vegetables including kale and carrots make up Joe's salad.
When Joe began this lifestyle over 7 years ago, he weighed 175 pounds. Now 45 pounds lighter, at 51 he has the body of a 20 year old athlete. While 80% of Joe's diet is raw, he also modifies recipes of "normal" foods like birthday cake - which is made without flour or sugar, and contains fresh fruit.
Calorie restriction, according to Dr. Oz, is the #1 way to extend longevity of life - possibly up to 50%.
Calorie restriction works by tricking the body into thinking there are limited resources - instead of reproducing, the body becomes more efficient to live longer, creating a new chemical pathway, explained Dr. Oz.
Couple, Paul and Meredith, joined Oprah and Dr. Oz via Skype from NY to share more about the calorie restriction lifestyle. At 60, Paul consumes 1900 calories per day, while Meredith ranges from 16-1700 per day. The couple have been eating this way for 15 years and feel they have more energy than they had in their 30s.
Dr. Oz warned viewers that to follow a calorie restricted diet, one must be monitored by a doctor, and eat certain nutrient rich foods every day to ensure proper health for the lifestyle to be effective.
Regenerative Medicine:
Dr. Oz moved on to share with Oprah and viewers a medical field that could drastically change the way people live out their lives. Regenerative medicine is a way to create new organs outside of the body. Taking organs most similar to human organs and removing the tissues makes a mold that can be seeded with life cells and incubated - in less than a month a perfect organ for that individual will be regenerated. Dr. Oz visited Wake Forrest University to walk cameras through the facilities and process. This technology will make it possible to build the parts that are needed for a patient and extend life for decades.
Back on the stage, Dr. Oz brought along some examples to show Oprah and viewers. A bladder, liver and heart mold were show as Oprah commented how the technology is unbelievable - almost like science fiction come to life.
This technology is great news for those waiting for an organ transplant. Having an organ built from your own cells means no need for medication, no synthetics in your body, no rejection and it only takes weeks to grow.
Lee, in the audience, shared his story of losing the tip of his finger building models. Unable to reattach the finger, Lee was given a powder made from pig extract, created by his brother. Lee was able to treat himself, applying the powder directly to his fingertip. In just 4 weeks, Lee's body regenerated a new fingertip complete with a fingernail. Once this technology is available on a wider scale, it can make a huge difference to a number of patients.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:
Dr. Oz introduced viewers to hyperbaric oxygen therapy in which a person lays in a tube for 1 hour and pressurizes the chamber with oxygen, allowing cells to absorb the extra oxygen. Dr. Oz tested the treatment and a volunteer from the audience also used the treatment during the show and reported to Oprah feeling calm and more aware.
Infrared Sauna:
The infrared sauna is different from traditional steam saunas in the way it isn't as hot in the sauna, but still heats the body up. Raising the bodies temperature drops blood pressure, doesn't hurt the lungs, increases blood circulation, burns calories and sweats toxins.
Smart Toilet:
Advances have also happened medically in the bathroom - the development of a smart toilet allows an attachment to catch and analyze urine to update your health regularly. While today this technology is only available in Japan and tests the sugar levels, the future for this technology is there.
David Murdock:
Visiting David Murdock's 2200 acre home, Oprah spent time with the 85 year-old head of Dole fruit to find out how he stays youthful and healthy. Murdock shared a bit with Oprah about how he reached this point in his life at 85 - after failing the 9th grade, enlisting in the army and serving in WWII, Murdock returned to the US homeless with just 6 cents in his pocket. With a free cup of coffee in a diner, Murdock was given a loan by a good samaritan to buy the diner, which he turned around and sold for a profit. Getting into the real estate business by accident, Murdock has made a multi-billion dollar fortune from buying and selling companies.
Now the head of Dole, Murdock's interest in health began when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. When his wife passed away, Murdock dedicated much of his life to medical research and prevention. The research Murdock has supported has uncovered important links from nutrition to health. Through the work at Murdock's facilities, doctors and patients will one day be able to customize care to the individual and know exactly what each person needs to be healthy and vital.
Murdock also keeps his own health at the top of his priority list. Waking at 6am for cardio and weight training, Murdock also focuses his diet mainly on fruits and vegetables. At 85, Murdock takes no medications and hasn't had a cold or flu in 20 years. Murdock's diet consists of fruit and veggie smoothies throughout the day, steel cut oatmeal with blueberries and kiwi for breakfast, an egg white omelet with vegetables for lunch, and fish with beans and more vegetables for dinner. Avoiding saturated fats, added sugar and salt are also important parts of Murdock's diet.
