Situated in western South Dakota, Badlands National Park is a 244,400-acre recreation area with hiking trails and chances for mountain climbing. The national park's name derives from the Lakota tribe's description of the area, "mako sica," which translates into "bad lands." The Badlands offer accommodations within the park and in the nearby city of Wall. The Badlands' rugged mountain scenery provides plenty of photo opportunities and families can enjoy horseback riding through the park's trails. - The Badlands Ranch Resort, located on the eastern edge of the Badlands, offers family-oriented activities, such as horseback riding on the resort's 1,000 acres and fishing on the White River, which flows through the property. Fishing on the river is free, but the resort requests that guests throw smaller fish back into the river.
Other recreational facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, archery area and playground. Families on an extended stay can take advantage of the resort's laundromat. The resort provides 33 RV camping sites, one-bedroom cabins and motel-style rooms. Pets may stay at the resort.
