How to Calculate the Material Needed for Quilt Backing
- 1). Iron quilt top so that it lies completely flat, free of puckers, and lay it out in an unobstructed area for accurate measuring.

Measure the quilt top width and length. Measure in three separate areas in each direction and use the largest measurement from each if they differ. Add 6 inches to both the width and the length measurements for the size of the quilt backing. - 3). Divide the width measurement from Step 2 by the width of the backing material after laundering and removing its selvages, and round up to the nearest whole number for the number of widths of backing material S needed for the quilt.
- 4). Divide the length of the quilt top from Step 2 by 36 for the number of yards of backing material necessary.
- 5). Multiply the number of yards from Step 4 by the number of fabric widths from Step 3 for the total number of yards of material needed to make the quilt back.
