      Measure the quilt top width and length. Measure in three separate areas in each direction and use the largest measurement from each if they differ. Add 6 inches to both the width and the length measurements for the size of the quilt backing.

    • 3). Divide the width measurement from Step 2 by the width of the backing material after laundering and removing its selvages, and round up to the nearest whole number for the number of widths of backing material S needed for the quilt.

    • 4). Divide the length of the quilt top from Step 2 by 36 for the number of yards of backing material necessary.

    • 5). Multiply the number of yards from Step 4 by the number of fabric widths from Step 3 for the total number of yards of material needed to make the quilt back.
