Acne Scarring
15 million Americans suffer from acne scarring. The count is staggering. Of course these are varying in degree, some people may have mild scarring, but some people are left with horrendous disfigurement of the skin on their face. But it just isn't the appearance that is traumatic, it is the deep adverse psychological effects that have the most sweeping consequences. Physical scarring itself represents only a small part of the damage. Acne scarring is disfiguring both physically and emotionally.
Scarring generally occurs when the sebaceous gland and the surrounding area is repeatedly infected. As the bacteria fill the pore, the body's immune system receives a message that there is an injury to be repaired. The immune system works hard to repair the damage, but in doing so, creates scar tissue. Unfortunately, it is on the face were it is most unwelcome.
However, acne scarring is a not a done deal, it can be helped. With technology today, acne scar treatment has taken leaps and bounds from treatment compared to even five years ago. A trip to the dermatologist, and the scars can be history. Depending on the extent of the acne scarring the doctor will recommend one or a combination of the following methods. All of the treatments have a good success rate with varying degrees of down time.
***** Microdermabrasion refers to a number of techniques that use instruments to literally peel the top layer of skin off, usually the dead layer of protective cells on the very surface of the skin. The tools used can be compared to miniature electric grinder, much like those use in a machine shop.
*****Chemical peels work in the same fashion as dermabrasion, except in this treatment a broad range of chemical solutions are applied to the skin. The peel (the chemicals) dissolve skin cells, promoting the growth of new tissue.
*****Dermal Fillers utilize the injection of collagen underneath depressed scar tissue and raise the area up to the level of healthy skin. This are a wonderful temporary remedy, but unfortunately have to be repeated frequently as the collagen tends to dissipate in the body over time.
*****Punch excision is a method of surgery that utilizes a punch biopsy tool to physically remove the scar tissue. Local anesthesia is applied to the area and the tool is used to remove the scar and the skin is sutured back together. Eventually the healthy skin will replace the area of the old scar tissue.
*****Laser Treatment. Laser treatment is now the treatment of choice for getting rid of acne scars. Laser therapy removes the skin layer by layer, and treatment can be completed in as little as one session. There are a number of laser therapies available for different types of scarring.
Acne scars are difficult to cope with but they don't have to be permanent. Not with all the technology or treatments available. Consult with a physician. They have the education and experience to give you the best range of options for getting rid of acne scars.
