Mexican Auto Insurance and the Law of Mexico!
Mexican Auto Insurance and Fulfilling Your Financial Obligations
The law in Mexico says that you need to be able to make good on your financial responsibilities when you are involved in a car accident. The same is true for everyone who gets behind the wheel of a car down in Mexico. Although the law does not specifically list Mexican auto liability insurance as a requirement, it is obviously the most practical way of fulfilling this obligation. The only other alternative is to carry around large amounts of cash. Immediately following an accident, the cops will ask to see your Mexico car insurance. If you cant give it to them or show them a lot of money, you are probably going to jail.
Why Jail?
The reason that you will probably be taken to jail for not showing proof of Mexican auto insurance is that the police need to make sure that you dont run off without making good on your financial responsibilities. Right off the bat, the police treat everyone who has been involved in a car accident as guilty. Until they finish their investigation then, you will be considered guilty. They have to act on that assumption, which means that they cant let you leave without showing them that you can pay for the damages or injuries that you have caused.
Dont Take an Unnecessary Risk
The simplest and most straightforward way to show the authorities that you can make good on your financial responsibilities is by showing them proof of valid Mexican auto liability insurance. As long as you can do that, you should be good to go. If it turns out that you are at fault, you will only have to pay a deductible. That is much better than forking over hundreds or thousands of dollars out of pocket. You will also avoid being locked up in jail, which is infinitely better than the alternative.
