What Should I Include In A Thank You Card?

The wedding has come and gone, the gifts have been unwrapped, and you've got a nice tan from the honeymoon. It was such a nice experience, but before you're ready to move on there is one more step to take to fulfill your wedding etiquette requirements. Here is what you need to know to fill out thank you cards after the wedding.

Most thank you cards are going to be a variation on the following wording, which is to someone with whom you are close who attended the wedding.

Dear Aunt Judith,
Thank you so much for the handsome pewter tea kettle. It is just the thing we needed for our collection and we are sure we will be using it for many years to come. It was wonderful seeing you at the wedding, and we look forward to seeing you again at the reunion.
With love,
Alexis and Mark

Notice the informal greeting and closing. The gift was mentioned, a specific quality was praised, the guest was mentioned and it was expressed that they look forward to seeing the guest again.

For a thank you to a guest with whom you do not have a close relationship or who is only an acquaintance, use the following format (it also demonstrates how to thank a guest for buying a gift from your registry):

Dear Mrs. Welling,
Thank you so much for the handsome pewter tea kettle. We have been coveting it for some time now and are sure we will be using it for many years to come. It was very nice meeting you and we hope to continue our acquaintance in the future.
Sincerely,
Mr. and Mrs. Smith

For a cash gift, write along the following lines:

Dear Aunt Judith,
Thank you so much for your gift. It went toward the down payment on our house, and we are happy to say we are now living in our first home together! It is a four-bedroom in the Ashville suburbs and even has a fenced yard for our dog, Buddy. It was so nice to see you at the wedding, and we can't wait to see you at the next reunion.
With love,
Alexis and Mark

To show thanks for a donation to charity in your name, mention the charity and what it means to you.

Dear Aunt Judith,
Thank you so much for giving to Heifer International. The money you gave bought a deserving family a goat. That family now has nutrition and a means of financial support they did not have before. Next spring, they will donate a baby goat to another deserving family. In a few years, you will have changed the lives of their entire village. It was so nice to see you at the wedding and we look forward to seeing you at the next reunion.
With Love,
Alexis and Mark

For a guest who did not attend the wedding but sent a gift in their absence, write as follows:

Dear Aunt Judith,
Thank you so much for the handsome pewter tea kettle. It was just the thing we needed for our collection and we are sure we will be using it for many years to come. We missed seeing you at the wedding. Buddy was the ring bearer and Grandma Jane had too much wine and danced the Macarena. I look forward to seeing you at the next reunion and I hope you are feeling better soon.
With Love,
Alexis and Mark
