Does Oil Paint and Oil Stain Protect Your Wood Floors?

104 11

    Paint and Stain Differences

    • Oil-based paints protect wood from the damaging effects of rain, snow and other wet weather conditions. Oil stains also guard against moisture damage if they have a penetrating formula, but for maximum protection with an oil-based stain you must apply an additional layer of wood preservative such as wax. Stains also come in two varieties, solid-color and semi-transparent. Both solid-color and semi-transparent stains are more likely than paint to rub off on shoes and clothing if you apply them to a wood floor.

    Exterior Floors

    • Exterior wood floors such as deck floors need oil-based paint or stain to prevent moisture from eventually cracking, discoloring and rotting the wood. Penetrating oil stains soak into the wood floor and keep water from entering. If the stain doesn't have a penetrating wood preservative included in its formula, apply one after the stain has dried.

    Interior Floors

    • Interior wood floors have less exposure to outside weather conditions but feet still drag damaging moisture onto the floor. Oil-based paints and oil-based stains containing a wood preservative both provide adequate moisture protection to interior wood floors. Penetrating oil stains are available without coloring if you wish to preserve an older floor's appearance but prevent it from deteriorating further.

    Historical Treatments

    • Antique wood floors from the 19th century were made of wood planks and most received no protective treatment. Everyday use caused these untreated floors to develop wear marks and depressions that some homeowners consider charming and valuable. If your wood floors contribute to an antique atmosphere or design, consider avoiding the protection of oil-based paints and stains and developing an authentic weathered look.
