Choices for Edging Flower Beds

Creating a crisp edge for a flower bed can give it a clean, neat and professional look. There are many different options for edging a flower bed, from natural materials to manufactured ones. Edging your flower beds can also help prevent weeds from creeping into it and can help control erosion. Use the same type of edging throughout your yard for a more cohesive look. - Flagstones can give your flower garden a raised appearance. Purchase some stones from a local home improvement store. You can place one layer of flagstones around your garden, or stack two or three on top of each other to make the bed look raised.
- This is probably the easiest and most economical way to edge a flower bed. Simply dig a trench about 4 inches deep around your bed. You can leave the trench empty, but be aware that weeds will probably grow in it and erosion could cause it to collapse. Another alternative is to fill it with pebbles, rocks or crushed oyster shells.
- Using bricks to edge your garden can add an earthy color to the landscape. Simply stack bricks one or two levels high around your garden. Bricks come in many different colors, so choose one that best complements your yard or your home.
- Treated wood planks or railroad ties also can work for flower bed edging. This type of edging is best for straight flower beds because the pieces of wood will be long. Wood edging will help prevent weeds if you dig a small trench at the edge of the bed and place the wood inside it.
- There are all kinds of manufactured decorative flower garden edging options. Some are concrete, with designs imprinted on them. These can be used in the same manner as flagstones or bricks. Others are made out of plastic and look like small fences or lattice. These should be driven into the ground a couple inches and left to stand up at the edge of the bed.
