How to Make Outdoor Instruments

    • 1). Drill holes through the tops of metal pipes to create a hanging xylophone. Tie string to each hole and then secure the pipes to an exposed beam or tree branch outside your house. Arrange the pipes from biggest (longest and largest diameter) to smallest. Use a metal saw to cut the pipes to an exact length. Or you could leave it as is for a more artistic look. Use a rubber mallet to tap against the pipes.

    • 2). Arrange different size barrels next to each other for an outdoor drum set. Use prefabricated drumsticks or make your own by sanding pieces of wood to remove slivers. Hang pots and pans to bang near the drums to create different sounds.

    • 3). Attach a piece of sheet metal to a tree branch by drilling holes in the top and tying it with heavy duty string. Leave the metal in its original form or cut it down in the shape of a circle to create a gong. Use the drumstick or rubber mallet to hit the metal and experiment with the sounds it can make. Hit it once, hard, to make it sound like a gong. Use a metal pipe to hit it or rake along its grooves to make different sounds.
